Chapter Meeting

  • President Tim Culver called the meeting to order

  • Thank you to Jane Atwood for hosting!

  • Thank you to Vice President Beth Cram Porter for coordinating this year’s auditions

  • The membership is 154.

  • Tracy gave the Treasurer’s report – treasury is healthy, but we lose a lot of money throughout the year, especially through auditions. 

    • Consider raising teacher registration and/or student registration to $25

    • Laurie Lashbrook moved to raise lunch $ to $25

    • Motion to raise student registration fee to $25

      • Concern regarding the additional cost to the students in addition to travel, lodging, pianist

      • If we raise it, make sure we have a masterclass or similar opportunity for the students’ benefit (Lashbrook)

        • Concern regarding attendance

      • (Southern) has visited other Chapters’ auditions and many successfully have masterclasses during audition day

      • (Graber) students spend $5 on Starbucks, so the additional $5 to register isn’t a huge increase

      • Vote: for 26, against 13

  • Dates:

    • March 6-7 2020, Regional Auditions at BGSU

    • April 4 2020, Chapter meeting at Capital University

      • Working with transgender and non-binary students; Loraine Sims from LSU will be guest

    • Oct 23-34 2020, Fall Chapter auditions at Baldwin Wallace 

    • March 5-6 2021, Regional Auditions at Kent State Univ. 

  • How to support members outside of meetings

    • Can we provide opportunities?

      • Mentorship?

      • Send in proposals to present at fall or spring meetings

      • Fall 2020 – we would like to have members’ recital

        • Those interested will need to send in audition recording 

      • If you have ideas, please reach out to the board! 

  • (DM-H) would like us to consider having the spring meeting on a Sunday, as private teachers have to give up a day of teaching to attend on a Saturday. 

    • We can look at that for spring 2021

  • State Governor Dean Southern

    • NATSAA Auditions Nov. 9

    • Congrats to members who had students place at the National Auditions!

    • Don’t forget to renew your membership!

    • NATS isn’t just Auditions, but is research and support!

    • Linda Snyder convened an International Advisory committee

      • Dean Southern and Kyung Kim are members

      • Aim to build connections with our colleagues in other countries

      • NATS International Ambassador Program

        • If you travel frequently, please look into this! 

        • There is a database of connections!

        • Look at International Initiatives on the National website

    • 75th NATS Anniversary trip to Germany was this summer

  • Norma Codispoti is our Great Lakes Liaison for the NATS Foundation

    • It funds many of our National Programs

    • Any gift is appreciated

    • Our chapter contributes twice/year!

    • You can make a donation when you renew your dues

    • Ohio has already had the competition, but there are others within driving distance

    • Lunch 

      • Some will have it delivered 

      • Others go to student union 

    • Your room must decide who is head judge and who is the timer

    • All rep has been vetted, no need to police the rep

    • iPads are allowed 

    • transgender students have handwritten their pronouns on the judging forms

    • 1-8, 8 min categories

    • 9-15, 10 min categories 

    • Time begins when first piece is announced 

    • Upper categories begin with piece of choice, judges choose from there

    • Write constructive comments!! Let’s motivate them!

    • Ranking sheet – rank each singer!

    • When finished, room head judge will gather all comment sheets and all ranking sheets and bring to tabulation room
