

Dr. Alexandria (Alex) Hanhold is a versatile soprano, educator, and advocate for science-informed, cross-genre voice training. Equally at home in classical and contemporary styles, she specializes in functional vocal cross-training, helping singers develop healthy, sustainable technique across musical theater, opera, commercial music, and beyond.

Alex most recently held appointments as Adjunct and Visiting Assistant Professor of Voice at The University of Toledo, where she oversaw the voice area and taught applied voice, voice pedagogy, literature, diction, and lyric theatre workshop at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Prior to her work at Toledo, Alex taught applied voice at Muskingum University and served as a graduate associate at The Ohio State University. Now located in northeast Ohio, Alex maintains an active private studio and frequently coaches performers of all ages in both educational and professional settings.

As a performer, Alex’s work spans opera, musical theater, concert repertoire, and song recital. Notable roles include Cinderella (Into the Woods), Marian (The Music Man), Johanna (Sweeney Todd ), and Carla Silverton in the Ohio premiere of Griffin Candey’s opera Sweets by Kate. In 2023, she was featured as the soprano soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with her alma mater, the University of Akron. In addition to performing, she is active as a music director and conductor, with recent credits including Once Upon a Mattress and Catch Me If You Can.
Committed to evidence-based teaching, Alex’s research interests include vocal cross-training, motor learning, curriculum design, and the application of vocal science in the studio. She is a sought-after clinician and presenter, having led workshops and masterclasses on topics such as vocal health, audition preparation, crossover technique, and sustainable performance practices. Additionally, she regularly serves as an adjudicator for various music competitions and festivals.

Alex is a graduate from The Ohio State University where she earned her Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Vocal Performance. While at Ohio State, she additionally pursued the program’s distinctive Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Singing Health and a Graduate Certificate in College and University Teaching through the College of Education. Alex earned her Master of Music from the University of Akron and a Bachelor of Music from Bowling Green State University. She is a proud alumna of the prestigious NATS Intern Program (2025), a unique and immersive training program pairing expert master teachers with early-career voice instructors.
